Impeccable Big Band Sound
Formed in 1990, the 78 RPM Big Band dominates the jazz, blues, soul and funk scene in Cambridge. Its lively and versatile approach quickly established it as one of the most popular bands in the Eastern Region and beyond. With their showmanship and energetic style, performances are definitely not to be missed.
The Essential Performance
The (up to) seventeen piece band are as equally at home in a concert environment as they are in the strict tempo ballroom or local club or pub. Whatever the venue their performance is electric, spontaneous and full of vitality and enthusiasm. They are immaculately turned out in dinner jackets or their black polo shirts which sport the distinctive 78 RPM logo are worn for the less formal occasion.
A Storehouse of Sounds
78 RPM play a wide range of music from the 1930s and ‘40s through to the present day including the luscious big band tones of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, the funk of The Average White Band and Earth, Wind and Fire, to infectious dance music from 1950s Rock and Roll, ‘60s Soul, 70s and 80s Disco and more contemporary chart sounds.
Holding Impressive Credentials
The individual musicians have impressive credentials with varied and interesting backgrounds. They have a wealth of experience in live performing, coming from West End shows, cruise ships, having featured in numerous radio and TV broadcasts. Collectively the band have played with Mark Rattray, Luke Goss, Bernie Marsden and Colin Bluntstone, The Drifters, Shakatak, The Nolan Sisters and Katrina and The Waves.
Award Winning
The Band was awarded second place in the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Big Band Competition in 1995 and the band's leader, Julian Landymore, scooped the Marty Paich Trophy for best arrangement.
Vocal Presence
To complement its big band sound, 78 RPM can add male or female vocalists to add a little extra 'wow' to the line up performing songs in swing, latin and pop styles from the likes of Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.
Versatile Programme
78 RPM provides musical entertainment for many different occasions with a versatile programme packed full of fun and surprises, appealing to a wide audience. Should your venue require it the band's line up can be fashioned for a ten, twelve or fourteen piece. A duo, trio or quartet can provide live background music for drinks receptions or dinner music and recorded music is always available.
