Oliver is a key proponent of sustainable living and eco design. In recent years Oliver has acted as a media spokesperson for both the Waste and Resources Action Programme and the Energy Saving Trust. He has written green design features for Friends of the Earth and currently writes a weekly design column for The Observer magazine. He is also filming a new architectural design television series for ITV.
He sees the current challenges of climate change and global warming as an opportunity to reappraise our whole approach to design and the built environment in a way not seen since the industrial revolution. Yet while we need to change and reassess our effect on the environment, it needn't mean sacrificing the comfort and convenience of modern lifestyle; instead to meet this challenge we need to ensure future products and buildings start out with sustainable living and eco design at the heart of the brief.
Since winning the BBC Homefront Young Designer of the Year award in 1998, Oliver has been busy building his architecture and design business as well as working on a variety of TV design shows including BBC Changing Rooms, BBC Home Front and Channel 4's From House To Home.
He is also the co-founder of Ecocentric, an online store for ethical, eco friendly products. Oliver says:
"As a designer I feel it's important to try to put environmental thought into everything I do. Before now this has often meant having to compromise my sense of style, something I found very frustrating. Speaking to friends and colleagues I realised I wasn't the only one. I really believe there are a growing number of people who are trying to live a more sustainable life but who are struggling to find the kind of stylish, quality products they want. Fortunately, there is now a whole new generation of designers and manufacturers creating beautiful products that are environmentally and ethically sound. At EcoCentric we have chosen the very best of these and brought them together under one roof. Now it's much easier for ethically minded people who care about the kinds of products they buy to have the best of both worlds - beautiful stylish design and sustainability."
Oliver is available for speaking engagements on sustainable living and eco design.
"Oliver was an absolute pleasure to deal with…Our client was extremely happy with the interviews. " Marketittiers4DC - July 2007 - Oliver took part in a radio day on behalf of Focus DIY
"Many people commented on how they had enjoyed your speech as well as chatting with you after the ceremony. Having someone such as you attending our event makes the occasion extra special, for not only our winners and their guests, but also for the staff who worked hard to bring the evening together."
