In the London 2012 Olympics, Nicola Adams defeated Mary Kom from India in the flyweight semifinal. She went on to defeat Chinese boxer and world number one Ren Cancan in the final to claim the first Olympic women's boxing gold medal in history.
The flyweight boxer became the first British woman to win a major boxing title with victory at the 2011 European Championships.
Nicola was first taken to boxing classes by her mother when she was 13.
In 2001 she became the first woman boxer ever to represent England, in a fight against an Irish boxer. In 2003 she became English amateur champion for first time, and she retained the title at the next three championships.
She now boxes out of the Haringey Police Community Club.
Leeds-born Nicola suffered a career-threatening back injury in 2009, which sidelined her for a year.
She won her third successive World Championship silver medal in May 2012, losing to China's Ren Cancan in the final for the second time.
She has been an extra in Coronation Street and Emmerdale and says of the experience: "My goal there is to get a line or two; maybe there will be the need for a fitness instructor or boxer?"
One of her big loves is snowboarding but she has had to put it on hold until after the Olympics.
