Norris was Conservative MP for Oxford East and then Epping Forest between 1983
and 1997.
He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to three ministers, William Waldegrave
at the Department of Environment, Nick Ridley as Secretary of State for Trade
and Industry and Kenneth Baker as Home Secretary.
In 1992 he became Minister for Transport in London and held the post until
1996 becoming one of London's best-known political figures in the process. In
1997, Steve became Director General of the Road Haulage Association until 2000
when he stood as Conservative candidate for Mayor of London. He ran again in
2004, pushing the incumbent mayor to a run-off on both occasions.
He is now a director of a number of quoted and private companies including
non-executive chairman of Jarvis plc, director of ITIS Holdings plc and Survey
Inspection Systems Ltd. He advises a number of blue chip clients on public
affairs issues with special emphasis on transport and the built environment. He
was Chairman of the National Cycling Strategy Board from 2001-2004 and is
President of the Motor Cycle Industry Association.
He is a regular broadcaster and writer who is frequently in demand as an
after dinner speaker and conference chairman.
Steve lives in London with his wife Emma and their son, Harry.
