The Explorations
Sir Chris Bonington made his first
climbing expedition to the Alps in 1958. His first ascent was of the
South West Pillar of the Drus and the first ascent of the Central Pillar
of the Freney on the south side of the Mont Blanc in 1961. At that time
this was one of the most difficult climbs in the Alps and even today is
considered one of the great classics.
He has written ten books and in 1985 he devised, wrote,
and presented the award winning television series "Lakeland Rock".
He often talks about his own personal success in
reaching the Summit of Everest in 1985 at the age of fifty. The
expedition placed eighteen climbers and sherpas on the summit in three
separate ascents, a record for a single expedition.
Bonington was stretched to the limit in his own bid for
the summit, and describes how he was helped by the men around him. He
also describes his thoughts as he approached the summit. The audience
are taken up Everest in such a way they feel they are almost on the
mountain and yet are constantly referred back to their own work
situation so the relevant parallels can be drawn.
