are the most common mistakes when
booking a string quartet?
Paul:- Not knowing
how many musicians are in a quartet!
And booking one of the many student
/ amateur quartets that are the bane
of our professional life.
Sandra:- So what's
the difference between a
professional quartet and an amateur
quartet? What can people expect when
booking your quartet?
Paul:- We are a
professional quartet, all our
members being conservatoire trained
full time symphony musicians. Most
student / amateur outfits do not
have the repertoire or experience.
As Britain's first and foremost
'crossover' string quartet,
STATUS CYMBAL is the string
quartet with it's own distinctive
style. As well as playing the works
of the great composers for the
medium, it has it's own unique
library of sparkling and witty
arrangements of all kinds of popular
music from Opera through to Swing
and Jazz to the great Musicals, Pop
hits and Rock classics. The idea of
this, is a traditional classical
lineup playing familiar modern tunes
intrigues and delights audiences of
all ages and walks of life. As a
result, the schedule now embraces
concerts, all kinds of functions,
both corporate and private, (we have
performed at over 1350 weddings in
our 34 year history), together with
entertaining in hotels and
restaurants and on board cruise
liners and appearances on television
and radio/

It
wasn't just our waistlines that expanded
over Christmas, The Company did too!
On 1st January 2011 The Edge
Entertainment Agency took over Viscount
Entertainment.
Both
companies, well-established in their
field, arrange entertainment for
corporate and private events.
David Sands,
the former owner of Viscount
Entertainments said, having made the
decision to stand down as owner of the
agency, his priority was to hand over to
a company who would fulfill existing
commitments to customers and artistes
and maintain the quality of service that
Viscount Entertainment has provided
since its inception in 2004. The Edge
Entertainment Agency, having operated in
the field since 1996, is well-respected
in the industry, and comes with a good
reputation and history, and so David was
delighted when The Edge agreed to the
deal.
The takeover
will provide economies of scale and,
geographically, the newly-acquired
Manchester based Viscount Entertainment
conveniently abuts The Edge's original
main region of activity. In more recent
times The Edge's operations have
expanded both nationally and
internationally.
Viscount
Entertainment continues to operate as
before, under the Viscount brand, and
each company's services continue to be
provided locally, nationwide and further
afield.
The Edge
Entertainment Agency was set up in 1996
by its current director, Andrew Harvey.
Viscount Entertainments was started by
its retiring owner, David Sands, in 1997
Of the
takeover, David said, "The Edge is a
reputable company with reliable
personnel, and a good, tight business, a
leader in the field, It is a fine match
for the Viscount brand."

Don't cancel Christmas.
Use your Tax allowance
for your Christmas Parties.
Did you know that a
Christmas party has a
tax advantage?
The cost of corporate
entertainment can be an
allowable expense
against your tax bill.
Christmas parties are
always the highlight of
the year. After working
hard all year staff look
forward to one of the
one night of the year
where they can all let
their hair down - and
not having to pay for it
themselves is a
fantastic tax free
bonus.
Although companies
sometimes feel they
should be cancelling
Christmas parties
because of a lack of
budget, many do not
realise that throwing a
party could benefit
their staff motivation
and boost productivity -
and all this can also
reduce their tax bill.
To qualify the
following must apply:-
The event has to be
available to all employees.
It has to be an annual
event(s)
The average cost must be
less than £150 per member of
staff.
You will lose the
exemption if:-
Only certain employees are
invited, or separate events
are held for different
workgroups etc.
It is an exemption not an
allowance - so if exceeded
the cost if all taxable on
the employee as a benefit.
The total cost must include
transport, accommodation
etc.
In Addition:-
Spouses and partners can be
invited but are included in
the £150 per employee.
You can hold more than one
annual event as long as you
don't exceed the limit per
head.
Trivial gifts are allowable
in addition to the
entertaining allowance.
VAT can be reclaimed in
full. If customers are also
invited to the party, VAT is
only reclaimed on the staff
cost.
Reward staff,
motivate staff and let the
HMRC contribute towards it!

Act Profile
Andy Davey - Caricaturist
Andy
Davey was born in London.
His dark years as a research chemist remain
obscure, but after winning a cartoon
competition in 1994, called "Back to Basics"
with the heinously difficult brief of poking
fun at the then Prime Minister John Major,
he emerged into the sunlit world of
cartoons.
Since then Andy's cartoon artwork has been
published in many UK and European newspapers
and magazines - The Guardian, The Times, The
Independent on Sunday, The Sunday Telegraph,
The Scotsman, Private Eye, Punch, The
Spectator, Prospect, Squib, E! Sharp and The
New Statesman. He also worked on the
satirical TV cartoon series 2DTV and has
made several appearances on Sky News, to
provide pictorial comment drawn live, to
cover important political events.
Andy works hard to promote the importance
and value of cartoons, and is president of
newly formed Professional Cartoonist's
Organisation which is committed to raising
the profile of this overlooked art form and
its exponents.
Though working primarily as a
cartoonist, Andy can on occasion, be coerced
out of his studio in Cambridge, for some
on-the-spot work. He is widely considered by
his peers, to be one of the very best
caricaturists working in the UK today.
By definition, caricature
(- an exaggerated or distorted
likeness, exposed for laughter and
merriment), makes perfect
entertainment for parties, wedding
receptions and corporate events. The
amusement of seeing friends, family or work
colleagues lampooned this way, provides a
great icebreaker. It is not about giving
everyone a nice picture to go home with and
the faint hearted may prefer to hide in the
toilets until Andy has moved on! Each head
and shoulders caricature is drawn in black
ink with tonal grey washes, on heavy A4
white paper and is presented with an A4
envelope.
