Kirsty
Wark is one of Britain's most highly regarded and versatile presenters. While
keeping strong roots in Scotland, she has for more than a decade been firmly
established with audiences throughout the United Kingdom as a presenter of
flagship national current affairs programmes.
Kirsty joined the BBC as a graduate researcher in 1976 for BBC
Radio Scotland after taking a degree in Scottish Studies at Edinburgh
University. As a radio producer in current affairs, she produced Good Morning
Scotland and the political programme Order Order.
After a spell on Radio 4's The World At One, Kirsty moved to
television in 1983 - first as an assistant producer on Agenda and Current
Account and then as a producer on Reporting Scotland. In 1985 she both produced
and presented the current affairs weekly Seven Days and from then on
concentrated on presenting Reporting Scotland, Left Right and Centre, and the
last two General Election programmes. In 1992-1993 she presented the Scottish
current affairs show Up Front.
She undertook a similar role in September 1997 for the
Scottish Referendum and also anchored the BBC coverage of the Scottish
Parliamentary elections in May 1999. As BBC Scotland's main presenter on all
it's political programmes and election specials, Kirsty has interviewed many top
politicians, but her most memorable interview was in 1990 when she conducted a
headline-making interview with the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

youth television series Words Apart, and for three years fronted Edinburgh
Nights from the Edinburgh Festival. In addition, she fronted the Nelson Mandela
Concert at Wembley and the Special Olympics in Glasgow.
From 1990-1993 Kirsty presented the Arts programme The Late
Show, and in 1993 fronted the popular BBC heritage series One Foot In The Past -
a role she continued into 2000.
In October 1993 she joined BBC2's flagship current affairs
programme Newsnight, and along with Jeremy Paxman, is one of the main presenters
of the programme. In February 1998 she was also signed for the BBC's Rough
Justice programme.
Kirsty formed the independent television production company
WARK CLEMENTS & CO. with Alan Clements in 1990 and has presented much of the
company's output, including Words With Wark, Restless Nation, Building A Nation,
Lives Less Ordinary and The Kirsty Wark Show.
Kirsty was named journalist of the year by BAFTA Scotland in
1993 and Best Television Presenter in 1997. In addition, Kirsty was chosen as
Scot of the Year 1998 - sponsored by Scotland On Sunday & Glenfiddich - and was
awarded the 1999 News and Current Affairs prize by Carlton Women in Film and
Television. She was also nominated for the prestigious Richard Dimbleby Award
for Best Television Presenter (Factual, Features and News) in the BAFTAS 2000.
Kirsty was born in Dumfries and educated in Kilmarnock. She is
married to Alan Clements and has two children. |
